Newbold travelled to title chasing wannabes Kenilworth and came away with a well earnt bonus point win Writes Phil Fereday.
The first score of the match came from Newbold’s first visit into Kenilworth’s red zone after Manny Sidhu came into the line and made good ground before offloading to Kyle Furlong who dummy his way over the line to score a try converted by Dan Obrien 0-7 after 8 mins. It was the home side who scored next with an unconverted try 5-7 after 15 mins. Once again in this evenly contested battle Newbold broke down Kenilworth defence and Kyle Furlong was on hand to receive the final offload to touchdown in the corner with Dan Obrien touchline kick adding the extra points 5 -14 after 20 mins. In the last few minutes of the first half Newbold were reduced down to 14 men with a yellow card and the home side took advance after a period of pressure and scored a try 10-14 in added time at the end of first half. The second half of the match was to follow the same pattern as the first with Newbold now back up to full complement scoring first through skipper Ben Dawes who was at the end of a sustained forward drive to touchdown the try was converted by Dan Obrien 10-21. Kenilworth came back to score from a well worked move a converted try 17-21. Once again it was Newbold who worked their way into Kenilworth 22 through some good ball retention moving play from different phrases till finally a drive for the try line from the forwards to see a smiling Kyle Furlong emerge from the pile to claim the try 17-26. As expected, Kenilworth came back strong at Newbold and in the dying minutes of the match scored a try 22-26 but that was the final score of a titanic battle between two teams both playing at the top of their game and giving the spectates a game to remember. A well-deserved hat trick of tries for Newbold’s Kyle Furlong but this was not a one man show it was to a man a good team performance with everyone playing their part in a very even and well contested match.
