An unchanged Newbold team gets a bonus point win. Writes Phil Fereday.
For the first time this season Newbold were able to put out an unchanged side from the previous week but it was only a few minutes into the game before losing powerhouse skipper Ben Thomson to an injury. So, with a reshuffled pack the Newbold scrum still turned on the power and gave Wolverhampton an uncomfortable afternoon in the set piece. The Bold were first on the scoreboard with man of the match Kyle Furlong taking a pass and running a perfect line thorough the visitor’s defence to go over to score a try converted by Dan Obrien 7-0. The next Bold score also came from the boot of Obrien after another penalty awarded from a set scrum 10-0. Just before the end of the first half with the visitors desperate defending against some powerful runs from the Newbold forwards it was Jamal Sakinmaz who bulldozed over the line to touch down for an unconverted try 15-0 at half time. After the break it was the visitors who scored first finally breaking through Newbold defence and scoring a converted try in the corner 15-7. Midway thorough the half and with Wolverhampton playing catch up they were throwing everything into attack and it took some fine tackling from Newbold to stem the flow with back rowers Charlie Reed and Kyle Furlong outstanding. In the final minutes of the game Newbold were on top and after some powerful runs from Rudi Reid and Wills Messum the ball found its way to Ben Dawes who after taking an inside pass to run in and score converted by Dan Obrien 22-7. The final play of the game with Newbold playing an advantage saw Jamie Mapletoft making a cross kick / pass that was well taken by Lee Lightowler to plunge over in the corner for the bonus point try 27-7.
