The Bold get a bonus point win with Happy Hooker Stu Houghton scoring a first half hat trick of tries. Writes Phil Fereday.
It did not take long for Newbold to get the scoreboard ticking with a clean line out catch from skipper Ben Thompson for the pack to rumble over the try line for Stu Houghton to touch down 7-0 after 3 minutes. The next score came after a period of pressure with Worcester conceding scrum penalties near their try line and the Bold were awarded a penalty try. Newbold’s pack were now completely on top and after a good catch by Rob Sandercock from an attacking line out pushed the visitors back over the line with Stu Houghton touching down. Just before half time the Newbold faithful crowd were treated to the best of the man of the match tries with Stu Houghton bursting down the wing making 22 metres having sold an outrageous dummy to touch down in the corner 26-0 at half time.
It seemed a different Worcester that started the second half gaining more possession and taking the game to the Bold showing there is no easy wins in this very competitive division and any win has to be hard fought for. So Newbold after a period defending started to put together some phases of play with the ball being kept in play and it was Kyle Furlong at the end of one move who broke thorough the visitors defence to score a try 33-0. Now in the final quarter of the game and with a superb cross kick from Dan Obrien flying winger Manny Sidhu caught the kick/ pass to sprint in to touch down in the corner 38-0. This was quickly followed by an Ed Spencer touch down in the opposite corner after some fine inter passing 45-0. The game now in the last few minutes saw Worcester who to their credit still determined to score pounding away on the Newbold try line but an equally determined Newbold defence keeping them out and after winning a turn over and clearing the line into Worcester half the final nail in the coffin was delivered. It was again from a powerful scrum pushing the tiring visitors pack backwards allowing Jamie Mapletoft to gather the ball and run in to score in the corner. Dan Obrien after making a welcome return to the side after a long layoff through injury converted from the touchline to complete a fine individual performance contributing 12 points to the scoreboard by converting six out of the eight tries.
