Newbold travelled to Malvern and came away with a much needed and deserved confidence boosting win writes Phil Fereday.
From the kick-off Newbold showed their intensions to keep possession of the ball and run at the home side but during these first exchangers they lost prop Josh Hutchinson due to injury and he was replaced by debutant Jamel Sakinmaz who made the most of this opportunity by putting in a fine performance. After 10 minutes of play Newbold pressure paid off with Kyle Furlong touching down to finish off some fine work by the forwards this was converted by Ethan Wookey 0-7. Malvern did not take long to hit back catching Newbold’s defence napping to score a converted try 7-7. A more determined Newbold now started to dominate with the forwards bossing both scrums and lineout with Stu Haughton throwing in hitting the spot and so the next score came from an attacking line out with Rob Sandercock taking a clean catch for the forwards to lock on and drive forwards making extra metres before releasing the ball to the back line to opened up the home side defence with Dale Heaton storming over to score a try converted by Ethan Wookey 7-14.The next score followed after a series of scrums on the Home side 5 meter line were the Malvern pack buckled under pressure and conceded a penalty try 7-21 at half time.
The second half started were Newbold left off with skipper Ben Thompson and Ben Dawes making the hard yards driving forward and with the back row of Dixon, Furlong and Reed outstanding in defence all this was keeping Malvern pinned in they own half. The next score came from more pressure on the home sideline and after conceding a penalty that was quickly taken by Ben Dawes who bulldozed his way over to touch down 7-26. All credit to Malvern they now came more into the game and posed a few problems for the Bold but some good cover tackling by the team and with Josh Cooke putting in some fine clearance kicks any danger was soon taken care of. It was from a Malvern attack that came to an end when Jamie Mapletoft intersected but he was caught closed to the Malvern line however from the resulting scrum the pack drove Malvern over the line for Wills Messum to touch down converted by Wookey 7-33. The final try of the match came after a few missed chances by Newbold and it was fittingly scored by Jamie Mapletoft to round off a fine personal performance 7-38.
