Newbold winning streak of 3 successive victories comes to an end by near neighbours Kenilworth writes Phil Fereday. On a day of refection and a chance to celebrate the lives of members who were sadly lost during lockdown a minute of applause was held before kick off.
The first half started and it did not take Newbold long to get into their stride with some determined tackles knocking back the visitors and from the breakdown winning back possession. The Bold were now on the attack and after a strong carry from Ben Dawes the ball was off loaded to Kyle Furlong to round off the move to touch down for a try converted by Ethan Wookey 7-0. Newbold now having the momentum continued to put the visitors under pressure winning good line out ball through Micky Pails and Rob Sandercock until from a line out catch and drive the forwards drove over the visitors line for Stu Houghton to claim the try which was not converted 12-0. It had been all Newbold for the first 20 mins but Kenilworth started to settle into their game and after a period of pressure scored a converted try 12-7 .The visitors were soon back on attack but just when it seemed Newbold had stemmed the flow they were reduced down to 14 men with a yellow card and Kenilworth took full advantage and scored a converted try straight away and Newbold were given a further yellow card at the same time reducing the Bold to 13 men 12-14. In spite of this disadvantage Newbold worked their way into the visitor’s half and were awarded a penalty which was successfully converted by Ethan Wookey from 40 metres out 15-14. Finally, the eventful first half was brought to an end with the visitors scoring an unconverted try 15-19.
Kenilworth were straight on the attack at the start of the second half and once again took full advantage of the 13-man home side to score an unconverted try 15-24. Now back to full strength Newbold began to take back the momentum once again putting the visitors under pressure but were unable to get that vital score until once again a further yellow card reduced them down to 14 men. Kenilworth now were able to take advantage to score a further 2 converted tries 15-38. Back to full strength Newbold pressed to score in the dying minutes of the game but could not break down a determined defence. The score line did not reflect the team effort and hard work that Newbold put in but ill-discipline was a major factor in the game allowing a strong and well drilled opposition to take advantage with extra men on the field.
