Another week and once again a much-changed Newbold team travelled to Sutton Coldfield. Having a settled team most seem a far-off dream for head coach Huw Thomas. Writes Phil Fereday.
Newbold kicked off and the home side secured possession and quickly moved the ball giving the Bold no time to settle and within a few minutes of play scored a converted try 7-0. On the restart the Bold managed to regain the ball and began to put some phases together but the home side again were next on the scoreboard with a penalty 10-0. Newbold now had a good period of play and pressed the home defence but only had an Ethan Wookey penalty to show for their efforts 10-3. The game moving into added time in the first half with Newbold throwing everything into attack looking to score only to see a loose ball picked up by the home side winger to run the full length of the pitch to score a try with the halftime whistle blowing after the successful conversion 17-3.
The second half began and once again the Bold were caught cold with the home side scoring a unconverted try 22-3 .Newbold rallied once again but could not finish off after some telling breaks with final passes going to ground and once again were frustrated as the home side scored another unconverted try against the run of play 27-3.At this stage of the match Newbold’s heads could of dropped but with skipper Ben Thompson leading from the front and the forwards gaining more possession the Bolds never give up sprit came through and so Newbold rallied in the last 10 minutes of play first scoring after a succession of scrums on the home try line a try by Jamie Mapletoft converted by Ethan Wookey 27-10 then in spite of being down to 14 men due to more injuries and after a series of pick and go drives in the forwards the ever hard working Kyle Furlong dived over for a converted try by Ethan Wookey 27-17 .So in a final desperate effort to secure a bonus point with the Bold pressing once again on the home side try line time ran out with the final whistle.
