Newbold travelled to Halesonians for the first match of the New Year with a good crowd of travelling supporters who were looking to them to continue with their winning ways. Write Phil Fereday
They were not to be disappointed as the Bold started the match with 2 try’s in the first 5 mins of the game both coming from good handling moves with Manny Sidhu diving over in the corner for a converted try by Dan Obrien this being quickly followed by Dan Obrien touching down in the opposite corner which he failed to convert so 0-12. The Bold continued to put the Home sideline under pressure for long periods but it was Halesonians who were to score next with a quickly taken penalty allowing an unconverted try in the corner 5-12 after 15 mins. Newbold were soon back on the attack and with the forwards making good yards through Rudi Reid and the ever-improving Ben Hartwell. From a close in line out taken by Tom Dixon, they drove over to score in the corner and it was a smiling Stu Houghton emerging with the ball to claim the score the conversion was missed 5-17 after 25 mins. The final score of the half was a penalty by the Home side 8-17.
The second half was a much more evenly contested affair with the Home side putting Newbold defence under pressure and they finally managed to break through to score an unconverted try in the corner 13-17 after an hour. Newbold managing to get more possession started to get on top again and it was the Bold who finished the game as they started on top and pressing for that bonus point try. It arrived by means of a break from their outstanding forward on the day Rudi Reid with the ball finding its way to Dan Obrien to touch down for his second try of the game which he converted 24-13 for a well-deserved bonus point away win. This game highlighting the fact that there are no easy games at this level and all wins are hard-fought for.
The Bold fans travelled home by coach and car celebrating the win and Sean Obrien a happy man going back by Pelican flight the next day safe trip you pair.
