Newbold travelled to Sutton Coldfield and took to the field with an added determination to help but a smile on their Chairman’s face because Fez was laying prostrate in hospital recovering from Surgery.
The home side kicked off to Newbold who then took it to the opposition with the big ball carriers making metres into the home side half. Ben Dawes, Rudi Reid and the Thompsons Ben and Sam being prominent runners in fact all the team were showing ball handling skills that a surgeon would be proud of. Phase after phase cutting through the opposition with laser precision. When the drives broke down it was scrum time and the Bold pack were dominant shunting the home side backward metres at a time. From one of these scrums Newbold scored a pushover try with scrum half Huw Thomas dotting the ball down under the post. Dan Obrien converted. The next score was soon to follow with the the Bold on top by now in all phases of play. It came from a lineout close to Suttons line that was cleanly taken by Tom Dixon. The Bold drove over the line with the smiling Stu Houghton appearing with the ball in hand to claiming the try that was not converted. 0 – 12 to the Bold. Newbold now seemed to drop off the pace and allowed Sutton back in the game and on a rare visit into the Bold half scored a converted try 7-12. This sparked off the Home side who had a strong period on attack kicking 2 penalty’s 13-12 to the home side. During this period the Bold were reduced to 14 men due to a yellow card for a high tackle. The Bold seemed to get their Mo Jo back and spent the last few mins of the first half pounding away on Suttons line and from a scrum scored a pushover try by Sam Thompson converted by Dan O 13-19 to the Bold at half time. It should be noted it was good to see Danny Treharne back in Newbold colours and new recruit Wes Hallam settling in the back row. Strong words most of been said at half time by coach Huw Thomas to tighten up the defence because Newbold started the second half knocking back the opposition and when gaining possession, the back line started making strong runs and from a set move Ethan Wookey collected a kick through to score in the corner that was not converted 13-24. The next score was by the Home side who scored an unconverted try from a catch and drive from a lineout. 18-24. Bold back on the attack were awarded a penalty converted by Dan O 18-27. The home side would not lie down and came back strongly and scored a converted try in the corner 25-27.In a frantic last few mins Newbold were awarded a penalty that was converted by Dan O making the score 25-30 but Sutton would still not give in and last play of the game were camped in Newbold’s 22 but the Bolds defence and discipline were holding out and it was scrum half Reiss Boon who dropped on the ball to re gain position for the Bold that allowed it to be kicked into touch for the final whistle to blow .A well won bonus point away win. That was greeted with much joy from the loyal Newbold traveling supporters. Their numbers were added to by a returning group of Newbold Vets from a business trip up North.
