Newbold welcomed Spalding to a wet and cold Parkfield Road hoping to build on last week’s excellent result and performance. In front of a vociferous crowd, Newbold again produced a fine display to run out comfortable winners at 41-14. What makes the result even more remarkable is that Newbold got off to a disappointing start and soon found themselves 14 points down. Keen to run the ball, despite the wet conditions, Newbold made a number of errors which allowed Spalding‘s prop to score a try after only 5 mins. Although Newbold responded with a fine break into the Spalding 22 by Finn Conway, Fin Reed and Euan Marshall they soon conceded ground as they repeatedly fell foul of the referee at the breakdown. Making progress down the pitch, Spalding were able to score their second try under the posts which, with the conversion added, gave the visitors a fourteen point lead.
This seemed to spur Newbold into action and they forced play into the Spalding 22 and the ball was held up over the line after a storming break by Ben Nuttall. However, Newbold were not to be denied for long and, after a break by Oli Childerhouse, prop Kyle Smith crashed over the line for a try which was converted by Finn Conway. From the restart Newbold continued to attack and after another break by Oli Childerhouse, carried on by Ben Nuttall and Stu Houghton, Will Adamson was tackled illegally and Newbold were awarded a penalty try and Spalding given their second yellow card. More was to follow from the restart as Finn Conway broke from his own half to score a thrilling individual try to which he also added the conversion. With a two man advantage Newbold were in the ascendancy and another break by Oli Childerhouse, carried on by Ed Spencer and Ben Nuttall, enabled Jack Toolan to score a try which was converted by Finn Conway with the last kick of the half to give Newbold the lead 28-14.
With a young and fast back line looking dangerous whenever they had the ball, and their forwards, led by Tom Dixon and Charlie Reed, now dominant in the loose, Newbold started the second half in the same attacking style. A break by Archie Wade, supported by Fin Reed, took play up to the Spalding line. Although Newbold were unable to score on this occasion the ensuing drop out was caught by Nathan Gray, whose delicate chip ahead was gathered by Gareth Lloyd to score in the corner with the conversion added by Nathan Gray. Despite receiving a red card following an accidentally mistimed tackle, Newbold continued to attack and Spalding,
unable to clear their lines, conceded a penalty which was slotted over by Nathan Gray. There was still time for Newbold to score another penalty after Spalding illegally stopped a break by Stu Houghton and Dan Gilbert to leave the final score a 41-14 victory to a Newbold side that produced another superb, all round team performance.
