Newbold welcomed Peterborough Lions to Parkfield Road hoping to finish the League season in style against a side that had languished near the bottom of the table all season. Unfortunately for their supporters relishing the sunshine, they met a powerful, and much- changed, opposition who made a mockery of their lowly league position and ran out comfortable winners 16-26. Peterborough Lions kicked off and a clearing kick by Nathan Gray took play deep into the visitor’s half before Newbold were penalised for a high tackle allowing the visitors to clear. Despite good work in defence by Jack Toolan and, man of the match Toby Lafferty, Newbold
were unable to clear their lines and excellent back play by Peterborough Lions enabled their powerful centre to burst through for a try to give the visitors the lead. From the restart, Newbold were penalised for not retreating after a kick and Peterborough opted to kick the penalty into the corner. From the resulting lineout, Peterborough’s rolling maul powered their
way over Newbold’s line for a converted try to extend their lead.
Newbold were finally stung into action and launched a series of attacks and a penalty from Nathan Gray reduced the deficit. From the restart a clearing kick from Phil Reed took play back into Peterborough’s half where the visitors were penalised allowing Nathan Gray to kick another penalty. Following excellent work by Lee Lightowler and Jack Saunders, Peterborough Lions were again penalised and Nathan Gray kicked another penalty from long range. Newbold were now beginning to show the form that has thrilled their supporters all year and a dazzling break down the touchline by Will Adamson, followed by a deft offload, allowed Lee Lightowler to score a try in the corner. With the conversion added by Nathan Gray, Newbold went into half time with a 16-12 lead.
Newbold kicked off the second half and an enterprising break by the home team was stopped illegally and Lions were given their second yellow card. Another excellent break by Nathan Gray, Lee Lightowler and Will Adamson was stopped close to the line with a foot in touch. With both sides keen to attack, Peterborough Lions scored their third try following a lineout in the corner to retake the lead. Following an interception near the half way line, the Lions centre burst through Newbold’s defence to score a spectacular, individual, try only for play to be brought back as the referee had been flattened during the build up! However, the visitors did not have to wait long to score as, from the restart, Newbold’s defence was again breached as the Lions extended the lead which they held to the end of the game despite Newbold’s continual attacks. Although the result was disappointing, Newbold’s players and coaching team can be proud of how the season has gone. With the experience they have gained this season the future for this talented team looks exciting.
