On a sunny afternoon at Parkfield Road, Newbold welcomed opponents Stewarts and Lloyds as well as their own Vice-Presidents who enjoyed an excellent lunch before the game. Stewarts and Lloyds kicked off with a deft, short kick which gave notice of their intent for the afternoon. Caught slightly off-guard, Newbold conceded a penalty which their opponents kicked to the corner. Although Newbold were able to repel this attack, when Stu Houghton overturned the ball, a number of missed tackles allowed the visitors number eight to rampage through for a try which was converted to give Stewarts & Lloyds an early seven
point lead.
From the restart, Newbold took play into their opponents 22 before conceding a penalty. Possibly expecting a clearance kick, Newbold were surprised by a quick, tap penalty taken by the fly half who ran the length of the field for a superb individual try to extend their lead.
Finally stung into action, Newbold hit back with an excellent try from man of the match, Toby Lafferty, whose break from the halfway line took him through a number of despairing tackles as he kept his balance to power over. Newbold continued to attack and a Finn Conway break took play deep in the Stewarts & Lloyds 22 where skipper, Jamie Mapletoft, looped around the defence to score a try under the posts which was converted by Nathan Gray to level the scores. More was to follow when a break by Will Adamson, carried on by Jamie Mapletoft whose return pass allowed Adamson, to outstrip the defence, to score a fine try to give Newbold a 17-12 lead at halftime.
The second half started with a cagey, and rather scrappy, period of play with both teams making a number of errors. The deadlock was finally broken by Toby Lafferty whose break took play into the Stewarts & Lloyds 22. From an ensuing scrum, Finn Conway burst through to score an excellent try which was converted by Nathan Gray to extend Newbold’s lead. Unfortunately, from the restart, Newbold conceded a penalty from which the visitors launched a series of attacks before scoring a try under the posts.
Newbold responded with a break by Archie Wade and Lee Lightowler who took play deep into their opponents half where they were awarded a penalty. From the lineout, a good take and break by Fin Reed, carried on by Ben Nuttall, took play up to the line where a scrum was won. A break from the base of the scrum by Toby Lafferty allowed Finn Conway to feed Ed Spencer to score a try, again converted by Nathan Gray.
Stewarts & Lloyds hit back with another try of their own before a break by Archie Wade, Ben Nuttall and Jamie Mapletoft enabled Kyle Smith to score a try in the corner in front of a jubilant group of spectators supporting from the clubhouse veranda The conversion was kicked by Nathan Gray to give Newbold the victory 38-24.
